Kyoto is famous not only for its beautiful Buddhist temples, but for its cuisine as well.

Also known as 'Kyoto's Kitchen', Nishiki market is a long and narrow shopping street with about a hundred shops and restaurants sometimes owned by the same families for generations.


Nishiki market has been existing for several centuries as a wholesale markets although today it is mostly for retail and it is packed with locals and tourists alike.

The market is specialized in food and you can find there everything from seasonal products to fresh seafood to knives and cookware. You can also find the specialties of Kyoto which consist in vegetables mostly, as Kyoto is far from the sea and was home to many Buddhist temples for many centuries.
