Gion is the famous geisha district of Kyoto, where you can find old streets and side alleys, wooden buildings, ochaya (teahouses) and restaurants serving Kyoto style kaiseki ryori (Japanese haute cuisine) and other types of both local and international food.
Gion is located around Shijo Avenue between Yasaka Shrine in the east and the Kamo River in the west, and comes alive at night with the beautiful lanterns lightening up the streets.
We walked there on our first evening in Kyoto and we were so impressed by the breathtaking beauty and vintage charm of Japan old imperial capital.
